I’m sure you’ve heard, by word of mouth, about the volcano that erupted on the Big Island in Hawaii. This is part myth; the volcano erupted in June and the lava is now moving towards civilian homes. In early September, officials warned residents of the Ka’ohe Homestead and Pahoa to evacuate their homes. This was because lava flowing from Kilauea, the volcano in question, was moving slowly but surely in that direction.
Luckily, the lava has moved north since then. The Ka’ohe Homestead is out of harm’s way, but the 950 people of Pahoa are in danger. On October 28th, the lava was 200 yards from the closest home. The Hawaiian National Guard were able to deploy 83 troops to Pahoa to keep civilians away from the 2,100^ F lava and to help get them to evacuate.
Some people think that the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, Pele, will direct the lava another way, so they are staying until the last moment- another reason why the Guard have to persuade them to leave. According to legend, Kilauea (or the longer version, Halema’uma’u Kilauea) is where she lives.
