Gallup’s Estimates says that half the people you meet are sleep-deprived. Studies show that missing sleep makes you moody, makes you forget things, hurts decision-making, prevents you from focusing, and makes you stressed. I’m sure that you have had some sleepless nights for no apparent reason. Everyone always suggests going to bed earlier, but nobody really wants to do that. You can turn to caffeine, which can make you alert, but also elevates your stress level.
So what can you do to get enough sleep each night?
Step One is to find an exact time when you should be in bed. For example, if you have to wake up by 6:30, and you need 8 hours of sleep, you can plan to be in bed by 10:30. Once you know that, proceed to Step Two. Write down what you do after school and before you go to bed, so you can find out what might be causing you to stay awake. - Read something that makes you happy! No more thrillers or action-books, something very mellow and not related to school.
- Lower the temperature in the room. I’m not sure why, but lots of people agree that having a cooler room makes you sleepier.
- Avoid electric lights. You know what these are; iPhone, laptop, etc. No more scrolling mindlessly through Instagram for an hour before bed.
- Take a walk outside for a little bit to help you wind down.
- Give yourself 30 minutes before turning out the light to just unwind.
- Don’t set your alarm right before bed, because it will stress you out.
