First came the cotton candy grapes. Yes, they are real. Now, there is a soda pop apple. The “Paradis Sparkling” is the result of an accidental crossbreed of a resi apple (East German, known for its sweet texture) and the English Pirouette (famous for its tasty crunch and ugly appearance). It was made in a Swiss fruit nursery called Lubera, run by Robert Maierhofer.
Maierhofer was the one who first saw the tree, in 2006. He was walking around the private orchard of Lubera when he came across it and didn’t know what it was. So, like anyone would, to find out if the apples were poisonous, he ate one. The apple had a perfect soft texture, a hard crunch, and a delicious flavor, even if it looked terrible.
Lubera was able to replicate the fruit after many years of hard work, and they have finally begun to sell the Paradis Sparkling saplings to companies. They will be in stores by 2015.
